Ah, tax season. It’s just about everyone’s least favorite time of year (unless, of course, you’re in the business of taxes – then it’s probably your favorite time of the year). And it’s understandable why everyone gets so annoyed come tax season, because if you aren’t well-versed in the language of taxes they can be confusing, time-consuming, and extremely frustrating. But as much as everyone may want to take the easy route and fill out the 1040-EZ tax forms with a few clicks of the mouse on the computer, sometimes it’s better to go ahead and hire a tax consultant and have them handle it for you. So how do you determine if you should be hiring a tax advisor?
1. You’re a contract employee
When you’re hired on a contract-basis and you don’t have taxes withdrawn from your paycheck that means you have to pay the taxes at the end of the year. It can be valuable to hire a tax advisor to help you figure out what all you need to pay and what you get to deduct as ‘business expenses’.
2. You’re itemizing your returns
Dealing with an itemized tax return can be overwhelming when you’re going through it for the first (and maybe even second, third and fourth) time. Hiring a tax advisor can give you extra peace of mind when it comes to making sure everything is itemized correctly.
3. You’ve bought and/or sold stocks
There are a lot of rules when it comes to filing money that you’ve made or lost from stocks, and the average person doesn’t know all the ins and outs of these rules, making hiring someone to correctly get them on paper well worth it.
4. You’ve input the information over and over…
And you’re getting a different return answer every time. Sometimes even when you think you know exactly what you’re doing when it comes time to actually file you keep coming up with different amounts that you owe or are owed. Sometimes it’s just easier to have someone else handle all of these nitpicky things.
These are just a few reasons you may want to consider hiring a tax advisor this time around. Hiring a tax advisor isn’t always the solution, but it can be worth it if you’re not filing a simple tax return. And while you do have to pay them to do the filing, at least you can rest assured that you’ll have your taxes done the right way, and they’ll be making sure that you get back the money you deserve instead of spending unnecessary money.
