Recently my husband and I decided to take a trip to Destin, Florida in order to enjoy one last glimpse of summer sun before the winter drudge kicked in. Driving from St. Louis, Missouri to Destin, Florida takes about fourteen hours and costs around $200 in gas money. A flight to Destin would cost over $300 for each person and include several layovers. Taking the car seemed like a much more affordable option than flying, but I was worried about driving non-stop through several states.
travel tips
My husband and I enjoy taking at least one road trip every summer. We have found that we end up saving money if we buy a travel guide for the places we are planning to go. That way we can study our destinations in advance as well as find the amenities we need while we are on the road.
We have saved money by being educated about the least expensive places to visit, sleep, camp, etc. One of our guide books helped us save a lot of money as it informed us that we can buy an annual pass for visiting parks in the United States. For $80 US we can go to as many parks as we want without having to pay each time. Without this knowledge we would have had no clue and would have ended up spending a lot more than just $80.
As I mentioned in a previous post, my husband and I are traveling right now, and have been for about the last month and a half. So far we have driven approximately 12,000 kilometers, and our focus has been to visit various national parks in the southwestern U.S. Due to nasty weather conditions, we have had to skip some of the parks and have opted to drive the coastline up through California instead. We have stayed in a hotel/motel 3 times so far on our journey, but most nights we stay in various campgrounds or RV Parks. We have also spent a few nights sleeping in our car in Walmart parking lots. We did discover (at 1:30 in the morning), however, that not all Walmarts allow for overnight parking.
