Should I Sell My Wedding Dress?

After getting married, I kept my wedding dress tucked away at one end of my closet for about five and a half years and then decided that there really was no point in keeping it anymore.  It took up a lot of room and I knew the likelihood of me ever wearing it again was slim to none.

My friend suggested that I try to sell it, but somehow it just didn’t seem right.  It somehow seemed really unsentimental.  So, instead, I decided to just donate it to a local thrift store.  Maybe that doesn’t sound very sentimental to you, either, but to me it made more sense.  Part of the reason is because I didn’t spend a ton of money on my dress, relative to how much many wedding dresses cost.  And who knows?  Maybe my dress will make someone else’s day really special!

However, if I had paid a lot of money for my dress, say $1000 or more, I might be more inclined to sell it.  If you are in a place where you could use the extra money, and you would also benefit from the extra space in your closet, consider bringing your dress to a consignment store.  You can also try selling it yourself online using eBay or craigslist.  There are also specific sites for brides such as CanadianBride, Weddingbells, recycledbride.com, etc. that you may find useful.

Although it may sound cold-hearted to part with your special wedding dress, it really is more practical to pass it on than to keep it in your closet collecting dust.  Besides, you have wedding pictures so you will never forget what your dress looked like.  Why not allow someone else to now enjoy it?

This is a great idea! I sold my dress at http://www.stillwhite.ca and got back 50% of what I originally paid.
