Buying and maintaining a home costs a lot of money; that’s why you need to think about how you can make long-term savings on the property. Here are 4 ideas to help you out.
1. Avoiding a Mortgage
For a lot of people, mortgages seem like the only realistic way into the inflated property market, which now seems like a realm reserved for the rich and their offspring. There are ways around the mortgage trap though. And by avoiding a mortgage you’ll make major savings in the long-term.
One way to buy a home without a mortgage is to lower your aims and buy a more modest home after saving up your money for a while beforehand. Alternatively, you could group together with some friends or like-minded people and spread the costs of home ownership between you.
It’s kind of comical how we ended up buying our iRobot Roomba 530. My husband told me that he was willing to start looking after cleaning the floors in our home. I was pumped as I find my weekends are generally filled with so many things to do after working all week, and not having to clean the floors would give me more time to get my other stuff done.
So, a few days later, I came home from work and discovered that my husband bought us a robot, and not just any robot, one that will clean our floors! At first I thought this was kind of weird. I mean, who would have thought of buying a robot? It makes me think of that movie with Will Smith when all the robots turn evil and start killing people.
It took a while to get over the strangeness of having a robot in my home.
Anyway, after getting over the weirdness of the whole thing, I began to really like this little robot. After all, it saves me at least two to three hours of time every week, freeing me up to do other things.
My husband and I are currently in the midst of getting new flooring installed in our home. We bought a home which is around 30 years old and some of the carpets were still the original ones from when the home was first built. Needless to say it was time for a change.
We decided to install vinyl flooring in our kitchen, laundry room and dining room. We saved quite a bit of money by doing the majority of the prep work ourselves. This involved pulling the two old layers of linoleum off of the subfloor and then scraping the remnants along with the adhesive off of the plywood subfloor. This was not a pleasant experience, but we saved ourselves about $50 per hour by not paying someone else to do it.
When it came time to install the vinyl, we hired a local professional to take care of it. We were very happy with the results and we are planning on hiring him again to do the rest of the upstairs.
