Check your insulation. Something else that can help to prevent your home from being directly affected by the temperatures outside is to check the insulation that is in your attic. If it’s worn or you see some areas that have holes, those are both signs that it’s time to get it replaced. Just make sure to use some eco-friendly materials like sheep’s wool or cotton and that it’s 12″ thick.
Purchase a programmable thermostat. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, it’s an affordable investment that you can make for your house. With it, you can set it for when you’re home and also when you’re away. That will help you to not waste any energy.
Service your HVAC unit. One of the main reasons why so many people experience declining HVAC efficiency is because they fail to call a technician over to inspect their unit unless it has broken down. But the reality is that you can cause your unit to work efficiently for years to come by simply having it inspected by a professional technician twice a year: once in the spring and once in the fall.
Leave it set at around 73 degrees. According to many energy experts, a lot of people end up paying more when it comes to their energy costs and it’s due to one simple thing: they change the temperature of your HVAC unit far too frequently. As it relates to that, here’s what might surprise you: If you set your thermostat between 73-74 degrees, it can keep the rooms of your house feeling comfortable year-round, no matter what the season. It’s a simple thing that can save you money each month on your electricity bills, for sure.
